Conde de los Andes 2003 tempranillo Rioja D.O.Ca. Woodbox x6 bouteilles
TASTING NOTES:
A complex and enveloping aromatic concentration stands out
along with characteristics of the grapes at the time of harvesting. It offers aromas of
blackcurrant, blackberry and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. The secondary aromas of vanilla, clove, cedar, tobacco and caramel are thanks to its maturation in quality oak and time to rest in the bottle.
VITICULTURE: The grapes for this Historic Collection Rioja come from vineyards in
Haro, Ollauri and other areas of Rioja Alta. The clay-limestone soil in this region allows
for optimum acidity to achieve expressive aromas and good aging potential. The 2005
vintage was classified by the Rioja Control Board as “Excellent” and many consider it to be historic, as the grapes and the vegetative cycle exceeded expectations. This was due to exceptional weather conditions throughout the year. High quality grapes with a higher concentration of aroma and flavor.
VINIFICATION: The grapes were handpicked in October and fermented for 25 days
in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for 24 months in French and American oak
barrels before bottling in 2009.
INTERESTING FACT: The Conde de los Andes underground cellars represent five
centuries of history in one kilometer as the Ollauri cellars were first opened at the end
of the Middle Ages. Today bottles from legendary vintages such as 1892, 1918, 1948
and 1964 are still cellared there.
FAMILY: In 1926, Bodegas Murua was founded by José Murua in Rioja Alavesa, one of
the three sub-regions of Rioja. Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, Julián
Murua Entrena began his own wine journey specializing in the art of blending,
eventually establishing Bodegas Muriel in 1982. Bodegas Muriel excels at producing
elegant and complex Reserva-designated Riojas. Julián and his son Javier now run the
winery with a mission to meld the long-held winemaking traditions of the region with
the new technologies of today.
